- Israeli strikes on Gaza ‘beyond what Palestinians can endure’The Israeli military is launching a very devastating aerial and land campaign in the Gaza Strip. We have seen that the scale of the strikes has expanded beyond what Palestinians can really endure during the past 24 hours. We are talking about a staggering death toll that surpassed more than 60 Palestinians since the early hours of this morning, killed by the Israelis in indiscriminate attacks.During the past few hours, we have heard sporadic explosions coming from the eastern areas of Deir el-Balah. It seems that the escalation is also expanding in the Nuseirat refugee camp, adjacent to the Netzarim Corridor, where a residential home in the past few hours has been bombed by Israeli forces. Three civilians were killed in the strike. The key attack that took place today was on the headquarters of the UN agency in Deir el-Balah, where one international staff member was killed and five others wounded.Elsewhere, there has also been remarkable escalation, and the attacks have included the targeting of a funeral home in Beit Lahiya, where 24 Palestinians were killed, including children, and elsewhere, people started evacuating areas that are close to the presence of Israeli forces.Click here to share on social media

The health system is suffering from a severe shortage of medicines, medical supplies, and fuel needed to operate medical equipment and generators,” the ministry said.“The direct targeting of health facilities has put more than 80 percent of hospitals and medical centres out of service, while the few remaining facilities are suffering from severe overcrowding, a severe shortage of medical staff, and the impossibility of performing urgent surgeries due to the lack of anaesthesia and basic supplies.”The ministry added: “In the West Bank, hospitals are under increasing pressure due to repeated attacks on Palestinian cities by occupation forces, which target medical personnel and impede ambulances from reaching the injured.”Click here to share on social mediaAdvertisement

Renewed Israeli escalation won’t eliminate HamasIsrael’s resumption of its assault on Gaza will not succeed in defeating Hamas just as 16 months of war also failed to do so, says HA Hellyer, a political analyst at the Royal United Services Institute in London and the Center for American Progress in Washington, DC.“I think what you’ve seen with this recommitment of different ground forces is a desire for Tel Aviv to turn the clock back in terms of the last month or so,” Hellyer told Al Jazeera.“So I think you’ll see the Netzarim Corridor become militarised again. You’ll see Palestinians being forced to move from the north back down to the south.”Still, he added, the only thing that could significantly change the dynamics on the ground is a political solution – something Israel seems to have no appetite for.“If there’s going to be any alternative to Hamas in Gaza, it won’t be because of bombing from the Israeli army. It will be because of political alternatives that will take over. And so far, the Israeli position has been to veto any such alternative,” Hellyer said.“If you really want it to go, then you have to address the issue of political rule in Gaza, and you have to address the underlying root of the problem, which is the Israeli occupation of Gaza, which has been constant since 1967,” he added.Click here to share on social media
- 19 Mar 2025 – 16:00 (16:00 GMT)Israel’s retaking of Netzarim Corridor clear violation, will spur more displacementBy Hani MahmoudReporting from Gaza City, GazaIn a statement, the Israeli military made it clear that it is taking over the Netzarim Corridor, from which it withdrew last month, allowing people to return to northern Gaza. This corridor began at 500 metres (about 1,640ft) long and kept expanding over the last year. It turned into a central military command for the Israeli military. Not only is this a clear violation of the terms of the ceasefire by the Israeli military, but now it’s cutting the Gaza Strip into two parts. …Those who just made their trip this morning to see remaining family members in the northern part of the Strip are going to be stuck there. And those who are in the central area and were hoping to get back to their homes at some point in the northern part of the Strip are not going to be able to do this. The Israeli military presence in the area is equivalent to a ground invasion. That’s made clear by the statement. It’s going to be a part of a starting point, or a launching point, for the occupying forces to implement military operations in the area. What we’re seeing here is an actual reoccupying of the Palestinian territories. After almost 16 months of forced displacement, it’s going to cause further displacement and isolation between the two parts of the Strip.Click here to share on social media

‘No forethought’ to Israel’s escalation in GazaIsrael’s renewed escalation in Gaza has been driven by domestic political considerations but lacks a long-term strategy, Ori Goldberg, an Israeli political analyst, tells Al Jazeera.“I don’t think Netanyahu is calculating, I think Netanyahu committed to a course of action that spoke of constant escalation, and I think this is the next step,” Goldberg said.“This isn’t different from anything Israel has already done, and there’s no virtue or forethought in this move except making the move itself. Israel needs to be perceived as active. I think that’s what’s topmost on the prime minister’s mind.”Goldberg added that any Israeli talk of beating Hamas is “delusional”.“There is no real chance of beating of Hamas. This is a game of chicken basically, and both sides are waiting for external intervention to stop them from heading down this path, which is obviously unproductive for both,” he said.“As far as Israel is concerned, this was a claim staked based on nothing but rhetoric and domestic political considerations. … This is about turning the clock back and pretending the last month and a half has not actually taken place.”Click here to share on social media

Israel retaking control of Netzarim Corridor, expanding ‘buffer’ in Gaza: MilitaryThe Israeli military says its ongoing escalation in Gaza, which has already killed at least 436 people, is intended to create a “partial buffer” in the territory. In a post on X, the military wrote that over the past 24 hours, its forces “have begun a focused ground operation in the center of the Gaza Strip and in the south with the aim of expanding the security area and creating a partial buffer between the north and south of the Strip”.It added that as part of the operation, Israeli forces retook control of the Netzarim Corridor, from which they had withdrawn in February under phase one of the ceasefire.
